The courses range from CEFR Level A1 to CEFR Level C2. Whether you are a basic user or a proficient user of English, we have just the right course for you.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It is used around the world to describe learners' language skills.


Cambridge English: A2 Key/A2 Key for Schools focuses on Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and is at Entry Level 2 in the UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It is also the easiest of the Cambridge English exams, passing of this exam shows that you can use everyday English at a basic level.

There are two versions of the A2 Key test:
  • A2 Key
  • A2 Key for Schools
Both versions have the same type of questions but the A2 Key for Schools test has content of interest to school-age learners.

A2 Key Exam Key facts

What can I do with my A2 Key qualification?
After you have passed A2 Key, you could go on to take B1 Preliminary/B1 Preliminary for Schools, and following that you could also take B2 First/B2 First for Schools or C1 Advanced.

Preparing for the A2 Key Exam
Two levels of preparatory courses (total of 160 hours) that will prepare you to sit the Cambridge English: A2 Key/A2 Key for Schools confidently:
  • Pre-A2 Key (CEFR A2 / IELTS below Band 4) (80 hours)
  • A2 Key (CEFR A2+ / IELTS below Band 4) (80 hours)

Pre-A2 Key and A2 Key are the most suitable courses for you if you are a limited user of English, or if English is not your first language but you want to have the skills to:
  • understand and use basic phrases and expressions
  • introduce yourself and answer basic questions about your personal details
  • interact with English speakers who talk slowly and clearly
  • write short, simple notes


Cambridge English: B1 Preliminary/B1 Preliminary for Schools focusses on Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It shows the world that you have an intermediate level of English.

There are two versions of the B1 Preliminary test:
  • B1 Preliminary
  • B1 Preliminary for Schools
Both versions have the same type of questions but, the B1 Preliminary for Schools test has content of interest to school-age learners.

What can I do with my B1 Preliminary qualification?
After you have passed B1 Preliminary, you could go on to take B2 First/B2 First for Schools, and following that you could also take C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.

Preparing for the B1 Preliminary Exam
Two levels of preparatory courses (total of 160 hours) that will prepare you to sit the Cambridge English: B1 Preliminary/B1 Preliminary for Schools confidently:
  • Pre-B1 Preliminary (CEFR B1 / IELTS Band 4.0-4.5) (80 hours)
  • B1 Preliminary (CEFR B1+ / IELTS Band 4.5-5.0) (80 hours)

Pre-B1 Preliminary and B1 Preliminary are the most suitable courses for you if have mastered the basics of English and you want to have the skills to:
  • understand the main points of straightforward instructions or public announcements
  • show awareness of opinions and mood in spoken and written English
  • develop your ability to communicate in English for practical tasks and situations
  • learn how to deal with most of the situations you might meet when travelling as a tourist in an English-speaking country
  • ask simple questions and take part in factual conversations in a work-based environment
  • write letters/emails or make notes on familiar matters


A Cambridge English: B2 First/B2 First for Schools qualification proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study courses taught in English.

There are two versions of the form-comment test:
  • B2 First
  • B2 First for Schools
Both versions have the same type of questions. The B2 First for schools test has content of interest to school-age learners.

What can I do with my B2 First qualification?
After you have passed B2 First, you could go on to take C1 Advanced and following that you could also take C2 Proficiency.

Preparatory courses (total of 160 hours) that will prepare you to sit the Cambridge English: B2 First/B2 First for Schools confidently:
  • B2 First (CEFR B2 / IELTS Band ~5.0-6.5) (160 hours)

B2 First courses are the most suitable for you if you are competent user and you want to:
  • have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study courses taught in English
  • communicate effectively face-to-face, expressing opinions and presenting arguments
  • follow the news
  • write clear, detailed English and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view

What Can I Do with my C2 Proficiency qualification?
Passing the C2 Proficiency exam means you have a level of English that is needed to study or work in a very senior professional or academic environment, for example in a postgraduate or PhD programme.

Preparing for the C2 Proficiency Exam
Preparatory courses (total of 160 hours) that will prepare you to sit the Cambridge English: C2 Proficiency confidently:
  • C2 Proficiency (CEFR C2 / IELTS Band 8.0-9.0) (160 hours)

C2 Proficiency courses are the most suitable for you if you are a proficient user and you want to have the skills to:
  • study demanding subjects at the highest level, including postgraduate or PhD programmes
  • negotiate and persuade effectively at senior management level in international business setups
  • understand the gist of complex pieces of writing
  • communicate complex and sensitive issues effectively, deal confidently with difficult questions

To determine which course is the most appropriate level to enrol in, learners are advised to take a placement test at CEA. It is advisable that learners have attended a minimum 160 hours of guided lessons before they enrol for another level of examination.
